Is Vinyl a Good Material for House Shutters?

September 29, 2009

Interior shutters can bring style to all of your rooms.  Interior shutters have been employed for the purpose of interior decor for years.  Traditionally, all interior shutters were made of wood.  There was no alternative.  Plastic was too flimsy and metal was unacceptable. Nowadays, though, there are diverse designs of interior house shutters and a few options other than wood.

One style of interior shutter that is very popular with shoppers is vinyl house shutters.  There is still a debate over which type of shutter is better.  There are advantages and disadvantages when it comes to both vinyl and wood interior shutters.

Wooden shutters

Wooden house shutters look attractive and are very old-fashioned. They add an atmosphere of richness to any home, whether they are mounted inside or on the outside. The majority of homeowners appreciate the style of real wood, and wooden shutters are sturdy and long-lasting as well.

Wooden shutters look great, when stained or painted.  They have to be either stained or painted and sealed in advance of mounting.  Then, on a regular basis, they need to have this done again and again.  Caring for wooden shutters uses both cash and sweat.  They are also very costly to pay for, especially if you request them pre stained.

Wooden shutters are also susceptible to fungus and insects. Because they are made of natural materials, they will eventually fall apart.

Vinyl shutters

Vinyl shutters are maintenance free.  They do not need any painting, staining or sealing - ever.  They are available in a variety of different colors and types and are a good-looking, maintenance free possibility when it comes to shutters for a home.

However, vinyl shutters can get dings in them each time anything hits them, like hail or a baseball. Although wood can get dings as well, vinyl seems to be easier to mark because it is a more pliable product.  Many people prefer to avoid vinyl because it is less expensive and looks like it.  There are still many consumers who prefer real wood.

Vinyl shutters are, let’s face it, plastic.  A few are made to mimic real wood, but cannot fool the discerning eye. Even though vinyl shutters can be more economical than wood shutters and are maintenance free, wood shutters are still preferred by the majority of homeowners.

Your ultimate selection of house shutters will depend upon your budget, which designs you like, and how much much time you will be able to spend working with the shutters.  If you would be happier with a shutter that will not require any maintenance and looks attractive on or in your home, you should look at vinyl house shutters

If you do not mind staining and painting your shutters every other year or so and believe they are worth a bit more money, you will probably like wooden shutters.  Either way, shutters can be a charming improvement to your home and come in a variety of styles, shapes and colors.  Whether you choose vinyl or wood, you will almost certainly discover the house shutters that live up to your expectations and complement your home.
