Discovering How to Use the Buzzbait
August 30, 2009
If you are any kind of bass fisherman at all, you must have a buzzbait in your tackle box. Often, when you don’t catch fish on one these lures, you’ll push it to the back of the tackle and forget about it forever. Now I’ll agree that the buzzbait is not my favorite type of bass fishing lure either, but it has been tested and known to produce some very good bass fishing.
Why do you suppose that is? Could it be that the bait has too much flash, is too big, and therefore may turn a largemouth off? Nothing could be further from the truth. With the right cast and retrieve, you can make the buzz baits produce fish for you. Here’s how to do it.
Grab your buzzbait and flick out there as close as you can to good bass cover. Make sure not to place your bait right in the cover, just very, very close to it. This will ensure that you get close to the fish, but don’t get tangled in the weeds. Watch your bait closely during the cast. When it gets close to hitting the water, stop the bail of your reel. This will force the line to tighten up, and the buzzbait will hit the water in the proper position, and will already have momentum going back towards you. So you can immediately begin to retrieve. Keep the buzzbait on top of the water, and steer it as close as possible to the submerged cover, without hitting it. If a bass didn’t nail it when it hit the water, look for a fish to snap it up as you approach the cover areas.
